College is an investment, and there are ways to research the return on that investment. This tool created by U.S. News and World Report helps you compare projected income between schools. Parchment also provides a lot of data for comparing colleges. You can even place them head-to-head and see which one students prefer! The U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop can help you compare the standards of living associated with the earning potential of your chosen field. This can be vital in determining how to choose a college. How To Choose a College: 4-Year Graduation Rate One data point to pay particular attention to is the 4-year graduation rate for each school. A less-expensive college can become the more expensive choice if a student can’t graduate in 4 years. This can happen if a student changes major, needs courses the school only offers in one semester or every other year or otherwise can’t take required courses in a 4-year span. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon. Pay attention to retention and transfer rates, too. Many students who transfer colleges find themselves behind at a new school if credits don’t transfer with them. Job Placement and Internships Another consideration for how to choose a college centers on career placement and internships. What is the proximity of the school to these opportunities? How strong is the school’s career center? Research the strength of the alumni/ae network on LinkedIn and social media. What are the accessible career paths of the graduates in your degree program? You can glean great information from how connected the graduates are to each other. Your student’s classmates will become their lifelong network; take care in choosing people. Two resources I like to consult are The Princeton Review’s â€Å"Colleges That Create Futures: 50 Schools that Launch Careers by Going Beyond the Classroom† and â€Å"Colleges that Pay You Back.† Are any of the schools you’re considering on these lists? Look at the Full Cost of a College The college award letter includes tuition, room and board, and some expenses. This is by no means an exhaustive list of expenses. Others may include: A major that may have additional expenses. Travel expenses, which can add up very quickly. An Apple MacBook Air costs $2,000. (I was pleasantly surprised when my son was provided a laptop freshmen year!) Uber: because you’re going to pay a heavy price for that peace of mind. Meals not covered by the meal plan. College in the city? This is going to add up. Significant Greek life expenses. Activity fees, which can vary significantly between colleges These unlisted costs can be a major factor in how to choose a college. They are not usually outlined by the schools and can come up as a huge (and NOT good) surprise when your child is already in attendance. And by that time, it will be too late to change things. Transfer Credits AP Classes If your student took Advanced Placement (APⓇ) or dual enrollment courses, know which credits each college will accept. This can have a significant impact on the cost of college because credits earned can mean an early graduation. The opportunities to earn college credits in high school are increasing dramatically. Every year, I have at least a dozen students going to college with enough credits to be considered sophomores. Colleges typically have a page on their websites regarding the transfer and acceptance of credits. If you can’t find the information, call the admissions office. When your senior graduates, they will need to have transcripts sent from the colleges at which they earned credit. Reconsideration of Financial Aid Are you disappointed with the amount of merit or financial aid received? You can ask for special consideration. Have you had a significant change in financial circumstances, or is there an extenuating circumstance that was unaddressed? Find out whether it’s a good time to write a financial aid appeal. If you ask for a review, make sure you’re comparing apples to apples with your colleges; you can’t approach a public university asking for them to match a private college’s merit offer. Ivy league schools, incidentally, don’t offer any merit aid. If you have had a significant improvement in grades or test scores, ask if you can send an updated report to colleges for consideration. Some colleges will consider a competing offer. Don’t be shy – if you don’t ask, the answer is always no. Does A More Expensive College Equal Best Future Salary If you think that the seductively prestigious, expensive college will lead to an automatic salary bump, consider this from an Atlantic Monthly article from 2004 entitled Who Needs Harvard?: â€Å"The researchers Alan Krueger and Stacy Berg Dale began investigating this question, and in 1999 produced a study that dropped a bomb on the notion of elite-college attendance as essential to success later in life. Krueger, a Princeton economist, and Dalestudied what happened to students who were accepted at an Ivy or a similar institution, but chose instead to attend a less sexy, â€Å"moderately selective† school. â€Å"It turned out that such students had, on average, the same income twenty years later as graduates of the elite colleges. Krueger and Dale found that for students bright enough to win admission to a top school, later income ‘varied little, no matter which type of college they attended.’ In other words, the student, not the school, was responsible for the success.†It was Krueger who famously wrote, â€Å"that you go to college is more important than where you go. Author Frank Bruni, reiterated this maxim in his book, Where You Go Is Not Who Youll Be. Make Your Investment Wisely You’re about to make an investment the size of a mortgage. Is the cost of an expensive college worth it? Only you can make that determination as you decide how to choose a college. Financial fit is only one component in selecting a great college; it is, however, a significant concern to the vast majority of us. In my experience, I can say with certainty that it is not worth it to get a second mortgage on your house, take money out of retirement, or saddle a young adult with crushing debt. A general rule of thumb is that total debt should not exceed the projected salary for the first year out of school. The CollegeBoard report â€Å"How Much Debt is Too Much† suggests that students should not devote more than 8 percent of their gross income to repayment of student loans. Your child is going to be who they are wherever they go. They’re going to make their own luck, develop their character, and make a difference at whichever school is lucky enough to have them. Before you make a decision to choose a college and celebrate it by purchasing the sweatshirt, do some homework on what the return may be on your significant college investment. A plethora of research was done recently on the manipulation of advertisements in today’s world. We see advertising almost every day, watching tv, on your mobile device, using the internet, even just walking around a city there is advertisment everywhere. They are not inherently bad, however they are manipulative in many ways. Many people today find it very difficult to accept the idea that ads are manipulative, because they want to believe they are in complete control of their choices. Of course not all advertising is bad, but we are going to look at the problematic point of view, and ways to avoid wasting money on things you don’t need. Adds reference things we think we desire, and make us buy things that we don’t need which is resulting in debt for many people. The main problem is that ads are for the rich, not just a regular everyday person. Unfortunately the rich don’t make up a majority of our population so, many people are buying things they can’t really afford. After the baroque period composers began to get a sense of individuality and an ability to make a living off of their music. The classical period consisted of composers appealing to the amateur musicians and experienced musicians altogether. The three main composers from the classical era are widely known: Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Haydn was one of the most talented composers of this fine lineup. The Austrian composed for Prince Strachey for thirty years and lived out a long life. Haydn did very well with the symphony and the string quartet for starters. I have known about Beethoven from a young age when I learned to play piano and have always had the utmost respect. The perfectionist attitude and hard work Beethoven put into his work was incredible. The piece that he completed called Ode to JOY was a very perfect example of classical era music.A consistent chord and note for a strong rhythm. As the piece progresses there are harder and more emphasized notes that give it its uniqueness. Moving onto the romantic period the composers that I personally would highlight are: Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Giaconda Puccini. Schubert was a major workhorse who produced hundreds of pieces. All of his pieces have a mass amount of moods Instituted into them, which is also a big part of romantic music. Machiavelli Essays - Machiavellianism, Renaissance Literature

Machiavelli Niccolo Machiavelli was not one, but three men: a political theorist, a military theorist, and a famous writer. Niccolo Machiavelli was born in Florence in 1469. The Machiavelli family was one of the most prominent politically in the city, having 15 Gonfaloniere among his ancestors.1 Niccolo's father, Bernardo Machiavelli was a legal consultant in the city, prominent participant in humanist scholarship of the day, and close associate of the city's First Chancellor. Niccolo received the very top quality humanist education available. We first hear of him playing an active role in the affairs of his native city in 1498, when the position for head of second chancery, came open. He was only twenty-nine years old at the time, and didn't have any previous experience. However, his nomination was confirmed and he was appointed second chancellor of the Florentine Republic.2 Machiavelli's official position involved him in very important duties. The first and second chanceries both handled official correspondence dealing with Florence's domestic, foreign, and military affairs. As head of the second chancier, Machiavelli was also soon assigned the further job of secretary to the Ten of War, the committee responsible for the Florence's diplomatic relations.3 In addition to his routine office duties, he also traveled abroad to act as spokesman for the Ten. During the next fourteen years, Machiavelli was sent on numerous diplomatic missions to France, Switzerland, and Germany. In June 1500, Machiavelli was in France at the court of Louis XII, negotiating for assistance in regaining Pisa, which had asserted its independence form Florence and tried to establish an independent city-state.4 There in France, Machiavelli saw first-hand the weak leadership of the king. He also learned about the French Parliament and its difficulties in resolving power struggles between the hereditary nobles and the common people. The Medici reentered the city of Florence in 1512, after eighteen years. Within weeks the free republic of Florence was swept away, and in came oligarchy, and the Medici family assumed absolute power. In November 1512, Machiavelli was dismissed from his government post and forbidden to leave Florentine territory for a year.5 In February 1513, he was falsely accused of taking part in an unsuccessful conspiracy against the Medici and was imprisoned.6 Early in the same year, Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici was elected as pope as Leo X. The election greatly strengthened the new regime in Florence. Along with celebrations, they freed many political prisoners, including Machiavelli. As soon as he was released, he tried to get his job back. With no response from the Medici, he withdrew to his farm at Sant' Andrea. There Machiavelli began writing "The Prince"-describes the means by which a leader may gain and maintain power. Machiavelli hoped that "The Prince" would bring him to the attention of the Medici. He wanted them to see that he was still their loyal subject, and to impassive that he was a man worth employing.7 The year 1512 is generally considered to have been the turning point of his life. Machiavelli, throughout his whole life was involved in politics and writing.. He was a born writer even when he was not trying. After he was dismissed from office, was when he used his writing as means to get his job back. The Medici didn't agree with the book, and the public was outraged. The public thought he was cruel and heartless for having such evil thoughts. Machiavelli never won the trust of the Medici, and never got his job back. From 1513 to the time of his death in 15278, he wrote numerous of political works including: The Prince, 1513; The Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy, 1513-1518; The Discourse on the War with Pisa, 1498; Report on the Fortifications of Florence, 1526; The Life of Castruccio Castracani, 1520; The Art of War, 1517-1520, etc. In addition, he wrote several literary works: Mandragola, a play; Clizia, an adaptation from Plautus; Belfagor, a novel.9 The Medici was kicked out of Florence a few years later.10 Machiavelli ran to take office, but his reputation with The Prince made people think that his political views were like the Medici and was not elected. Machiavelli continued to write and died peacefully in his home in 1527.11 Even after his death he was criticized for his corrupt ruling. Machiavelli's purpose was to describe the realities of political life-not to set up a school for tyrants.
